The Salesman

A salesman went out to sell. At some of the places where he called, he could not get past the
front desk. He left some sales material and his card, but the receptionist put them in the
circular file. At other places, he was welcomed, and the purchasing agents were cordial enough,
and seemed to like his product well enough; but when he asked for an order, there was always
some reason why they weren't able to buy just then. And there were places where he made his
sales presentation but got little response; and he found out, then or later, that these firms
had bought from one of his competitors.
But at some offices he was greeted warmly, and the purchasing agents would take him in to see
the general manager; and after frank and friendly discussions, he got substantial orders, orders
so large that they repaid him many times over for all his effort, some a hundredfold, some sixty,
some thirty.
